Review: The Mother Daughter Relationship Makeover Workbook by Leslie and Lindsey Glass
Mother-daughter relationships can be beautiful and powerful. But with the complexity of emotions and life experiences, they can also become strained. Mother and daughter Leslie and Lindsey Glass know this firsthand. After being extremely close, they went through a four-year period of separation due to addiction and other relational issues.
Despite their differences and trauma, the two came together and committed to mutually restoring their relationship. The result is their best-selling book The Mother Daughter Relationship Makeover. It was even featured by Oprah’s Book Club! Now, they have released an accompanying workbook chock full of journaling prompts, new practices, key questions, and wisdom.
While the workbook was written by Leslie and Lindsey, it was also put together with the assistance of Dee L Fabry Ph.D, a professor emeritus at National University in La Jolla, California who teaches Social Emotional Learning. Her expertise has lifted this from a memoir to a valuable therapeutic tool that can be applied to any number of relationships.
The workbook is designed to partner with the original book, and if you are working on a mother-daughter relationship, the two would partner exceptionally well. They act as an ideal way for both mum and daughter to individually do their own self work, then come together and try to heal and reconcile the difficult parts of their relationship.
There is so much content in the workbook, anyone could use it to supplement their own therapy. I was most impressed with the details about Emotional Intelligence, genograms and family trauma, mental health, navigating conflict, and learning about parenting styles.
From quick exercises to check how you’re feeling, a mood tracker, a sobriety recovery plan, to communication styles, this is a hands-on tool. Along the way, you learn about sticking points in relationships and how to reconcile them. Chapters cover how to talk about appearance and style, romantic relationships, finances, boundaries, and co-dependency.
While Leslie and Linds\ey hope people can reconcile through their workbook, they also discuss when it’s time to separate from one-another or take a break. Examples of harmful or toxic behaviour show what to look out for, and the duo always remain victim centred in their presentation.
