Born in Quorn, South Australia I spent many of my early years on the road and found a home in the Northern Territory as my parents established a church there. My time in the Northern Territory moulded an innate love of the land, mechanics and people into me. It was through the observation of my parents as they cared for the community and served in The Salvation Army flying padre that I chose to leave my initial career as a mechanic and enter The Salvation Army Training College in Melbourne
My time in The Salvation Army taught me the value of empathising and listening to people in all walks of life, and after serving as a minister in The Salvation Army and marrying Colleen, we made the especially difficult decision to branch out on our own in 1993.
With two children and a wife to care for, I relocated to Geelong and I worked as a bus driver for Gull Airport Services. My love for people drew me to become a Funeral Chaplain for many years before leaving this to pursue a degree in Social Work. Since this time I have established myself academically and practically as a social worker, mentoring and working in various leadership positions within the Salvation Army Social Services in Geelong and later with the State Government in the Department of Human Services—first in Public Housing services and later including Disability Accommodation Services.
In an effort to continue to help people, I have also completed training as a TRTP practitioner, which enables me to help clients work through trauma, anxiety and depression through mindfulness.
In every situation, it is my desire to reach out to people and assist them in the changes and situations in their life to help them reach their potential.
Due to my rich life experience, I am able to empathise and connect with people from a variety of backgrounds. Whether this is through supervision or a discussion about family dynamics, anger or other life issues, I am passionate about listening to people and assisting them in figuring out what their next step is.

I am a local girl born in Geelong, and while I wear the blue and white stripes with pride, it hasn’t been without transition.
In my early years, my settled, predictable life changed when my parents made the decision to relocate to Melbourne where they entered The Salvation Army Training College for Officers in Melbourne. For the next 27 years I relocated every 1 to 2 years—a different house, school, and community with it's own unique history and culture.
As a child, it was always exciting and even a relief to relocate. I learnt that if life wasn't so good where I was, I could always look forward to starting over in the next place.
On the other hand, these transitions also meant that I had to let go of friends and make new ones. I was shy and fearful by nature, so I frequently felt alone and unsure of myself. I had to draw heavily on the support of my family and my own inner resources to cope with this changing landscape that was my life.
It was in the unique culture of The Salvation Army church that I felt safe and learnt to thrive. Within this context my values and beliefs were formed and nurtured—in particular, the uniqueness and value of every person and the desire to help people grow and reach their potential.
Music and the church were my two loves. I initially pursued a career as a music educator, completing a Degree in Music at Adelaide University before relocating to Tasmania's East Coast to pursue a teaching career. At 23 years of age, I followed in my parent’s footsteps, and entered training to become a Salvation Army Officer. For the next 7 years I had leadership opportunities throughout city and country Victoria and South Australia.
In 1989 I married Duncan and together we continued to fulfil leadership responsibility for The Salvation Army.
As I transitioned from being a single professional to a married woman juggling family and career, I became severely depressed, retreating into myself, and struggling to cope with the daily needs of my family.
This life crisis was the impetus for significant change and growth in my life. Leaving the safety of The Salvation Army I relocated to Geelong with my family in 1993 to recover and make a new beginning.
I have reinvented myself many times over: youth and women's pastor, funeral celebrant, housing worker, manager of a mental health service, forensic drug and alcohol counsellor, and family therapist.
I have a rich and diverse experience that enables me to empathise with a broad range of people.
My greatest achievement is a strong and happy marriage relationship to my best friend and two beautiful daughters who are a constant source of inspiration and joy.
My own rich life experience, as well as my extensive training and study in counselling means that I can help you if you’re struggling.

Throughout my life I have experienced chronic illness and the impact of mental ill health – but I’ve also experienced the power of healthy community and support from therapists. These experiences motivated me to become a therapist, allowing me help people navigate the hills and valleys of life.
As a practitioner, I have been given incredible opportunities to learn from First Nations Youth in the Northern Territory. I have also worked alongside asylum seekers and refugees in Victoria and facilitated community programs for people across the Geelong region. For 6 years I directed the charity Hope Movement and travelled throughout Victoria, speaking at schools, festivals and churches about mental health, seeking support, and suicide prevention.
I have also worked alongside The Salvation Army in Geelong to direct a mental health program for young people. Through this, I partnered with schools to provide consultation, implement short term resilience programs, and provide referrals.
Approaches:
I have a Client-Centred approach, which is based upon the person’s needs and preferences. I utilise approaches such as Narrative Therapy, Psycho Education, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Relaxation Strategies, Motivational Interviewing, Attachment Work and Skills Training (e.g. parenting skills, social skills, coping skills).
